The good news: Your lawn is not dying. The bad news: It’s not thriving, either. If you’re looking to create a uniform look for your lawn, the best thing you can do is start over. One way to do that is to use a sod cutter and remove all the grass from your lawn. Another option is to seed your lawn so it will grow uniformly
It is difficult to maintain a lawn with different types of grasses. If you do not want to wait for the different types of grasses to grow and combine, you can purchase a type of grass seed that will be most suitable for your lawn.
There are two ways to get grass to look uniform. The first is by cutting the grass in a way that will disguise the patchy areas and the second is by adding a type of grass seed that will cover up.
The type of grass you have is dependent on the climate and types of soil in your area. Grasses need certain nutrients and conditions to thrive that may not be present in your lawn. If you want to make it uniform, consider replacing all of the grass with a single type; this will make it easier for the new grass to grow too.
One way to make a lawn more uniform is by using a weed-free ground cover. This can be accomplished by knotting the different types of grass together and then planting the covering over it. The grass will grow through the ground cover and blend together nicely within a year or two.
You may have a mixture of two or more types of grass in your yard, if so you’ll want to change the type of grass that is common in the majority of your yard. You can help this process along by spraying a weed killer. This will kill off all but the desired type and will also help any yellow patches turn green again.
My lawn doesn’t have the same type of grass throughout. I can see two to three types of grass. How do I make it uniform?
To make your lawn uniform, you’ll need to identify the different types of grass and why they are there. You can then start by selecting one type of grass to reseed the entire yard.
I think most lawns have mixed type of grass, and it’s likely that many commercial seed bags also contain multiple types. Getting the correct kind might be necessitated by de-thatching next spring (thoroughly aerating soil while removing layers of dead plant material). Make sure you “overseed” (spread grass seeds over an area that has already been planted)
If you’re an organic gardener who likes to do things by hand, a technique called overseeding can help rejuvenate your lawn on a budget. Conditions need to be perfect though: You have to water very well, keep seed cool & dry, and keep pests away for a while.
Ripping up the weeds and finding their corresponding seed can be so much trouble, looks weird, and might not work anyway.
I would recommend the first option if it were my lawn and bothered me as much. For those of us with brown lawns, we dislike them intensely because they are an inefficient use of water.
A while ago we tore up the lawn and planted yummy fruit and vegetables, which is much better for us, but to each his own!
How to fix different types of grass in your garden
Your lawn is simply overgrown weeds, which will be dispatched with the use of glyphosate. When the grass is dead, turn it over with a spade until it’s fertile soil and rake it level. Roll it back when you are done and re-seed with your preferred grass seed.
The best time for the beginning gardener to sow these is when the soil is moist and as soon as possible. This will help them survive and grow. Cover them up to keep the birds off until they sprout.
Should you be worried about different types of grass?
Some people mix different types of grasses when they plant a seed.
Combining two varieties of turfgrass has many benefits; for example, one type of grass is more resistant to diseases and insects than the other. They are also cheaper to maintain, easier to repair with new seeds and will require less time tending your lawn.
But you mostly see blending more with cool season grasses that spread by seeds like rye and couch rather than warm season grasses that spread by stolons like buffalo.
It could also be the case that the lawn has naturally become a mixture of grasses. My backyard has a soft-leaf buffalo and it’s doing just fine as a monoculture.
But on the nature strip where it receives less care (especially water), more traffic and transfer of seeds there are some large areas of Queensland blue couch.
There’s no selective weed killer that will only kill the couch and not the buffalo, so I can either live with it or laboriously selectively poison it. From a distance, it looks alright and I can manage.
Unless there’s a poison that only affects one of the grasses, then you’re going to have to get rid of all of it and start again if you want just one type.
It’s unlikely that if you try to favor a certain type of grass, it will come to dominate the lawn as blends are usually composed of many types of grasses.
Quick cheap methods to help your garden if they have uneven grass growing and different types?
The fastest way to reap rewards is to hire someone to re-sod the lawn. However, this may also be the most expensive and could take a lot of time depending on length of lawn.
Another way to solve the grass infestation problem would be to mix a couple of different seeds. First, cut your grass very short and spike it all over with a fork. Cover a 2-inch layer of new soil and reseed it with your mixture. The wider range of grass will help discourage weeds from growing again.
if your lawn is uneven throughout the yard, it’s likely because of different soil, sunlight or water conditions. but many residential developers simply flatten out the dirt they originally used for construction.
Soil can be made of different hard pack soils: clay, gravel, and sand. Who knows how they put that dirt on there and then some on top and move on. The homeowner will never realize the problem until it’s too late–apparently. Why not find out what you’re really dealing with on your property? Have your soil analyzed from different parts of the garden.
