Unfortunately, hostas (Funkien) are very popular with slugs. However, these uninvited garden guests tend to be selective when it comes to certain varieties of this beloved foliage plant. We present varieties that are largely resistant to slugs.
Hostas are known both as charming minis and as impressive XXL specimens. Their leaves come in beautiful shades ranging from dark green to yellow-green, often adorned with striking patterns in cream and yellow. Hostas offer an astonishing variety that can enrich any garden.
The plant’s demands are rather low. It prefers a partially shaded to shaded spot. Varieties like ‘August Moon’ and ‘Sum and Substance’ can tolerate sun, provided the soil remains moist enough. However, hostas dislike waterlogged soil. Mulching the bed with bark mulch is also not ideal, as it provides comfortable hiding places for their arch-enemies, the slugs. The soil should be rich in humus, so enrich it with leaf or bark compost.
Slugs can spoil the joy of these hardy foliage plants. Especially slugs love the leaves of hostas. In spring, when the new leaves are still soft and juicy, the most severe damage occurs. This can only be limited by applying slug pellets early and regularly—or by choosing varieties that don’t appeal as much to slugs.
