The robotic mower is ideal for this task. It continuously works its way forward and mows the lawn millimeter by millimeter. The clippings return to the lawn surface as mulch, where they provide nutrients and ensure protection from drying out.
Distance between cutting and housing
At the lawn edge, however, it becomes apparent that the robotic mower is subject to structural limitations. The housing provides a natural distance between the cutting edges and the lawn edge. This distance is necessary as a safety measure to prevent injuries. There are numerous sensors on the housing that prevent the robotic lawnmower from driving over obstacles or against a tree, for example.
But at the lawn edge, the distance proves to be extremely impractical. The robotic lawnmower is not able to reach the edge of the lawn precisely, so there is always a small residue left there. In these models, the blades are located in the center of the housing, so there is a certain distance all around.
Robotic mowers that can cut lawn edges
This is different for models that are also able to cut the edges of the lawn. In these, the blades are not located in the middle of the housing, but either more on the left or right side. Thus, the little helper is better able to reach even the boundaries. When cutting the lawn, the robotic lawnmower proceeds in such a way that it automatically runs off the edges with the blade side. This ensures a clean lawn edge.
Higher precision is required for these designs. When laying out the boundary wire, you must work very precisely so that the robotic lawnmower also has the opportunity to reach the lawn edges. If the boundary wires are placed too much inside the lawn, a visible lawn edge would still remain.
Laying lawn edging stones
If you want to use a robotic lawnmower in your garden, this involves a certain amount of installation work. You need to lay a boundary wire, which indicates the area in which the device is allowed to move.
To achieve the most perfect result, you can additionally use lawn edging stones. By laying the lawn edging stones, you move the lawn area a few centimeters inside. This means that the green area no longer reaches exactly to the wall or fence, but is slightly displaced inwards.
In order for the lawn edging stones to fulfill their purpose and facilitate the work of the robotic lawnmower, they must be laid at ground level. If they are too high, they will in turn create an obstacle and prevent the robot from reaching the edge with its blades.
Choose lawn edging stones that can be driven over by the robotic lawnmower without any problems. Then the wheels can be partially on the lawn and the stones, so that the cutting optimally pass over the edge.
Before you use a robotic lawnmower, you should be aware of this additional expense. Accurately measure the lawn area to install the lawn edging stones and perimeter wire. With a little preparation, you will get a more beautiful garden and the robotic lawnmower will be able to do its job without any problems.
Manually rework with the lawn trimmer
Do you not want to invest in a new robotic mower and laying lawn edging stones is not an alternative?
Then you still have the option of using a lawn edge trimmer to independently rework the edge. For this purpose, there are both gasoline-powered and battery-powered models.
For a small lawn edge, simple battery-powered lawn trimmers are perfectly sufficient. With these you can rework the edge of the lawn or unclean edges, for example around garden furniture or trees.
If your lawn is complex and has some obstacles, you have to decide for yourself whether it is worth investing in a robotic lawnmower with edge mowing function or if you want to do the finishing work yourself. With both variants you will get a clean result and will enjoy the beautiful green area.
The clean lawn edge with the robotic mower
If you operate an ordinary robotic mower in the garden, you will face the problem that the device is not able to mow the lawn up to the wall or fence. The housing is in the way and so there is always a certain distance between the blades and the edge.
To make the lawn look completely neat, you can use models that have an edge mowing function. In these devices, the blades are not located in the center of the housing, but on the edge. As a result, the distance is much smaller and the lawn edge is cut cleanly.
If you already own a robotic mower and don’t want to spend money on a new device, laying lawn edge stones is another way to make mowing easier. With the stones you border the green area inward and create a larger distance between the border and the lawn. As a result, longer blades of grass are no longer left behind and the bed edging can visually enhance the garden.
Last but not least, you can use a lawn trimmer yourself to work on the edge independently. It is up to you which of the three options you choose. Which method is most practical for you depends on the condition of the garden and the amount of work you are willing to invest.
