Recognizing marten noises
This blog post explains whether a marten is making noises in the house and how to recognize it based on this. However, this is not always easy, as martens only make noises in certain situations. We also reveal which ones they are here.
Compared to other animals, martens do not always make sounds – this means they behave much more quietly than, for example, a cat or a dog. Therefore, it can certainly happen that you don’t hear them for months, even though they are already in the attic. You can recognize this if they move around at night. A marten always causes louder scurrying noises than a mouse or rat. Additionally, you might hear the marten gnawing if it is working on the roof insulation.

Other Situations in Which a Marten Makes Noises
1. When it is in Danger
When a marten is in danger – for example, if it has been caught – it makes hissing and screaming noises. In this case, it sounds like an angry lion. The screaming noises are also very high-pitched and extremely unpleasant to the human ear. You can listen to what a marten’s hissing sounds like on YouTube.
2. Fighting Among Martens
Have you ever heard cats fighting? Unfortunately, they often do this at night and many people wake up because of it. It sounds similar when two martens fight. If the marten in the garden makes these noises, you could wake up from it as well.
3. Martens During Mating Season
Even during mating season, martens are relatively quiet and only occasionally make noises. These sometimes sound like chuckling or soft giggling. Sometimes these noises are reminiscent of those made by monkeys in the zoo. There are also videos of this on YouTube.
The Marten in the Car – Hardly Any Noises
A significant problem is that martens are such quiet animals. Therefore, they do not make sounds when they make themselves comfortable under a car hood. In this case, you only hear the marten if two martens are fighting over the territory. Because of this, you should take measures to drive the marten away: a professional engine wash should be carried out, a marten deterrent installed, or a marten repellent spray, such as those from Silberkraft, used. The latter can cover the marten’s scent and thus prevent it from claiming its territory. But be careful: now no other marten will smell the previous one and might think about using the treated car as a sleeping place.
Signs of Martens in the House
Are there special signs if a marten is in the house? Martens are nocturnal and if you are a particularly deep sleeper, you will hardly hear them. Although they make noises while running and might squeak, they are not particularly loud. You need to get close and listen carefully to determine if a marten is moving in the attic. If you are a light sleeper, you might wake up from their scratching and running around. Sometimes you can also hear a knocking on the roof. Some homeowners report that something was dragged across the floor. All these are signs that an animal is in the house. You should definitely find out if it is a marten. Because one thing is clear: a marten in the house is always dangerous, as it not only leaves food scraps around. It can also damage the roof insulation, causing very high damage to the house. Additionally, there is a very strong and unpleasant smell when it leaves behind feces and urine.
What Sounds Does a Baby Marten Make?
The same statements apply to a baby marten: it only makes noises when it is scared and feels threatened. However, the noises sound a bit different. They are also relatively high-pitched but sound like a continuous clicking noise. When a baby marten tries to hiss, it sounds more like a rumbling. Interestingly, baby martens seem less frightening and aggressive. The biggest difference is that a baby marten makes the noises over a longer period. Young martens make similar noises.
Conclusion: A Marten Rarely Makes Noises
Most of the noises a marten causes are when it is running. These noises are definitely loud and therefore differ from other animals that make noises in the attic. There are also squeaking and scratching noises. In the garden, the marten only makes noises during mating season and when fighting with competitors – but then it can be very loud and is clearly a matter of screams or hissing.
