As autumn approaches, many amateur gardeners ask themselves what will happen to their lawns now. What about mowing the lawn, is it still possible in October and November and when should you reach for the mower for the last time in autumn?
Requirements
Right off the bat, there is no set date for when you should mow your lawn for the last time of the year. When you look at your flowerbeds, you will quickly notice that ornamental and useful plants have long since stopped growing, while the lawn is still stretching upwards.
While the grass may not grow as much in the cool months as it does in the spring, the lawn mower may still be needed in October.
Contents
The following conditions must prevail:
- last lawn cutting takes place after the first night of frost.
- lawn must not be completely soaked
- there must be no bright sunshine.
- This is how you should proceed in October and November
In order to achieve a well-groomed appearance of your green area, you should set the cutting height to 50 mm. This will allow the grass to survive the harsh winter temperatures and will be perfect for the coming rigors.
If you leave a longer cutting height, there is a risk of fungus spreading. The first snow may fall as early as November, and the pressure of the snow masses will take its toll on the lawn. Fungal spores can multiply optimally and quickly in the depressed lawn.
Tip: If you have shade lawn in the garden, you should select a cutting height of 90 mm.
The biggest mistakes when cutting the lawn
Mistakes in autumn
Even if you mow for the last time after the first frost, your gardening skills will still be in demand. There are exhausting weeks ahead for your green space. To give the grass as much vigor as possible, be sure to avoid the following mistakes:
- Leaving clippings on the lawn
- mowing the grass too short
- stopped mowing the lawn too early
- uncut grass was trampled down
- In order for your lawn to do well and go into the winter as strong as possible, you should take the following tips to heart:
Mowing the lawn with a catch basket
cutting height should not fall below 50 mm
normal mowing rhythm is continued until the first frost
lawn is not walked on one hour before mowing
Mistakes in spring
Mistakes can creep in not only in autumn, but also in spring, during the first lawn mowing of the year. If it is approaching February, the grass has already grown mightily again.
Now is actually time for a cut, right? Wrong! A one-time interlude of high temperatures shouldn’t cause you to immediately pull the lawnmower out of the garage. The risk of another frost is too great. Only when temperatures are consistently above 10 °C is it advisable to start cutting the lawn. If you mow too early, there is a risk of frost damage to the delicate cut grass.
Autumn care tips for the lawn
Before the time comes for the last lawn cut, you can already do a lot for the health of your lawn. The following care measures have proven to be very helpful in advance:
- Scarify lawns with moss infestation at the end of September.
- Liming with Vitalkalk and subsequent watering
- fertilize after four weeks and sprinkle properly
- wait with the lawn mowing until the fertilizer grains are dissolved.
Important note: If your grass has already grown too long, you should remove a maximum of one third in length. It is better to mow several times than to make a too radical cut once.
