Basil is not native to Europe, but migrated to us from tropical regions in the 12th century. Thus, the herb plant is not equipped with hardy constitution. In order that the popular royal herb nevertheless thrives in the bed and on the balcony, the following optimal temperatures are in focus.
- the seeds will only germinate at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius
- planting out in the open is only possible after the Ice Saints, when there is no longer a threat of frost in the soil.
- in the bed and on the balcony 10 to 12 degrees Celsius is the absolute minimum temperature
- ideal growing conditions prevail at a warm 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and higher
If perennial basil varieties are moved in time to the windowsill or heated greenhouse, there is a good chance of successful overwintering. The main premise here are temperatures from 18 to 22 degrees in a sunny location.
