The privet
The privet (privet) is often the first option for project developers who want to make their new construction neighborhood more attractive to potential buyers. This has mostly to do with its rate of growth. Common privet (Ligustrum vulgare) and oval-leaved privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) have annual growth rates of up to 30 inches. Therefore, they grow fast enough to produce good results in the short term. They also don’t grow too fast and therefore won’t sprawl or even go wild as quickly. In addition, privet is one of a few hedge plants that looks just as good as a tightly trimmed back hedge as a privet hedge that has a natural shape with a country look.
In addition, privet is well suited as a privacy hedge. Officially, privet is a deciduous variety, because it sheds part of its leaves only when it should be particularly cold in winter. However, particularly cold winter periods hardly ever occur in Europe. Therefore, the hardy privet can still cope well with temperatures as low as -30°C. But that’s not all: the privet not only keeps its leaves in winter, but its leaves also have a green coloration in winter. Do you live in a relatively cold region? Then select the wintergreen privet (Ligustrum vulgare ‘Atrovirens’), which almost never sheds its leaves in winter.
The beech hedge
The beech hedge (Fagus sylvatica) is another hedge plant that is deciduous, but that usually keeps its leaves throughout the year. However, if you do this, make sure you plant the copper beech or copper beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropurpurea’) in a spot that is protected from the wind, as this will prevent them from losing their leaves as quickly. In windy locations, they will lose their color because they dry out. But even withered leaves will remain on a beech hedge for a long time. Therefore, beech is quite a beneficial alternative to other privacy hedges, which consist mainly of evergreen hedge plants.
Would you like to have a lot of privacy as soon as possible? Beech hedges have an annual growth between 30-60 cm, which is also not to be underestimated. The beech hedge, just like the privet, can be used in formal or less formal gardens. You don’t necessarily need to cut back your beech hedge either, but if you want to have a privacy hedge in your garden, then pruning is important. Of course, it is up to you how you want your beech hedge to look. However, it is certain that within a few years, a beech hedge will be tall enough to keep prying eyes out of your garden.
The Leyland cypress
Leyland cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii) is a hedge plant variety from our assortment that grows the fastest. Green Leyland cypress can grow almost a whole meter per year. Even the Yellow Leyland Cypress (Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’) has an annual growth between 50-80 cm. With this, other conifers are already quickly outstripped. If you prefer a privacy hedge, you should cut back the Leyland cypress regularly. This way it will always have a neat appearance. However, rejuvenation pruning is not possible. Therefore, if you miss pruning more often, then over time this will create bare, brown spots in the hedge.
After two years, a Green Leyland Cypress will have grown tall enough to be used as a privacy hedge. In the first few years, however, it will have a somewhat more open structure than, for example, the Thuja or the False Cypress. But even a slightly more open Leyland cypress hedge will still be able to be used to ward off prying eyes. Pedestrians, however, can see through a more open hedge if they really want to. A mock cypress hedge, on the other hand, is completely opaque if it matches your eye level or has already grown taller.
The ivy
For many garden owners it is less surprising that the ivy (Hedera) can grow quickly. In fact, in nature, you can often observe that the ivy likes to grow up tree trunks. However, because it has not only soil roots, but also adhesive roots, it can also easily grow along the wall of a building. This characteristic can be put to good use in directing your ivy plants over a metal trellis or over a wood trellis to form a handsome evergreen hedge. Its thick, dark green leaves have a wonderful sheen, and its annual growth of between 50-70 cm means an ivy hedge can quickly reach the height you desire.
An ivy hedge also has another great advantage, as it takes up very little space in the garden. For a smaller garden this is of course advantageous, because most taller hedge plants usually need quite a lot of space for their root system to grow high enough. However, you can keep an ivy hedge quite narrow so that it takes up as much space as a normal garden fence.
Other, fast growing hedge plants
The above hedge plants are recommended if you want to have a tall hedge in your garden quickly, but there are other options as well.
