Darker: the cherry laurel ‘Herbergii’.
The leaf colors of cherry laurel hedges can have a fresh green or dark green appearance. However, if you want to plant a cherry laurel hedge with completely dark green leaves in the garden, then you should take a closer look at the cherry laurel ‘Herbergii’. Of all the cherry laurel varieties in our range, the ‘Herbergii’ cherry laurel has the darkest leaf colors. A cherry laurel hedge of this variety therefore has a very unique appearance. The informal, rather wide growth can be compared to other cherry laurel varieties, but if you prefer dark green cherry laurel leaves above all, then the cherry laurel ‘Herbergii’ is a particularly stylish, elegant option.
However, the dark green leaves of the Cherry Laurel ‘Herbergii’ also have the advantage of making the flowers much more striking. Cherry Laurel ‘Herbergii’ is a profusely flowering cherry laurel variety on its own, but its extra deep green leaves make the white color of its flower clusters a real eye-catcher. However, this combination of dark green leaves and striking flowers is also present in the ‘Caucasica’ cherry laurel, although the ‘Caucasica’ cherry laurel is a bit more subtle in this regard. Therefore, if you want to have a privacy hedge in the garden, there are not many options when it comes to particularly deep green leaves: then the cherry laurel ‘Herbergii’ is actually the best solution.
Narrower: the cherry laurel ‘Zabeliana’.
The cherry laurel ‘Zabeliana’ can be easily recognized by its particularly narrow leaves. Cherry laurel leaves are, of course, always elongated and narrow in shape, but the leaves of the Cherry Laurel ‘Zabeliana’ are significantly narrower in shape than those of its congeners. The leaf shape of this cherry laurel is also much more pointed than other cherry laurel varieties, although this is less noticeable in an imposing cherry laurel hedge in the garden. Otherwise, the cherry laurel ‘Zabeliana’ is strongly branched and compact, which is very typical for a cherry laurel. As a result, cherry laurel hedges are also always good privacy hedges, which have dark green glossy leaves and therefore not only provide protection, but also look decorative.
Nevertheless, you should know that the cherry laurel ‘Zabeliana’ has a low growth. Therefore, it cannot grow higher than 1.50 meters. Besides, this cherry laurel also has a rather wide growth. Unlike the cherry laurel ‘Otto Luyken’, the cherry laurel ‘Zabeliana’ should therefore be cared for a little more intensively if you want to plant such a cherry laurel hedge in a smaller garden. Therefore, there are also garden owners who use the growth habit of the cherry laurel ‘Zabeliana’ quite specifically in the garden, namely as a somewhat taller ground cover.
Less elongated: the cherry laurel ‘Etna’.
All the cherry laurel varieties in our range have elongated leaves, but the leaves of the cherry laurel ‘Etna’ are shaped quite differently. Admittedly, the leaves of the cherry laurel ‘Etna’ are of course still elongated and narrow, although the ratio between length and width of our cherry laurel ‘Etna’ is smaller than in other varieties. As a result, a cherry laurel hedge ‘Etna’ usually has a slightly more formal shape than most cherry laurel hedges, although the leaves of this cherry laurel are still too large to be used as a tight hedge, even though the cherry laurel ‘Etna’ only has an annual growth of 20-30 cm.
However, the deviating leaf shape is not the only striking feature of a cherry laurel ‘Etna’. The color of the shoots is also absolutely unique and therefore particularly rewarding. Although a cherry laurel is always an evergreen hedge plant, the Cherry Laurel ‘Etna’ has fresh shoots in the spring that have a bronze to red appearance. Frequent pruning of your cherry laurel hedge, therefore, will ensure that these color accents become more frequent and noticeable. By the end of spring, the leaves of the Cherry Laurel ‘Etna’ will once again have a typical green, classic look for which the Cherry Laurel is so well known.
By the way, the cherry laurel ‘Etna’ is not the only cherry laurel with a budding that has fancy colors. The ‘Tico’ cherry laurel, a cultivar of the Portuguese cherry laurel, also has wonderful colors in the spring when its fresh shoots provide striking red, decidedly decorative color accents in the garden. Later in the spring, the Cherry Laurel ‘Tico’ also has pretty white flowers. However, with a maximum height of 1.50 meters, this cherry laurel hedge cannot be used as a privacy hedge, but as an ornamental hedge the cherry laurel ‘Tico’ is wonderfully suitable.
