Roadsides, meadows, riparian zones, ditches… the potent and, if overdosed, poisonous herb called comfrey thrives wild in many locations. But what aspects should be considered when choosing a location in the garden?
Requirements for location and soil
When planting comfrey should be selected a sunny to partial shade location. It prefers to be in a warm semi-shaded location. High altitudes are suitable for this herb. It occurs wild on mountain ranges up to 1,000 m.
Comfrey makes numerous demands on the soil. Nevertheless, it can adapt well and proves to be tolerant. The following characteristics of the soil are worth considering when planting comfrey:
- nutrient-rich
- humus
- medium to heavy
- pH between 6.5 and 7.5
- moist environment
- gladly marshy, boggy, loamy
Tips & Tricks
Thanks to its fleshy roots, comfrey can survive periods of drought without damage. Therefore, it is suitable even for southern locations in drier regions.
